The carnival has been in Fort Payne, Alabama this week. Which gives me a great excuse to recall some of my favorite images from the VFW Fairgrounds, which are practically in my backyard.

This image from my Times-Journal days ended up as a front page photo during fair week.

There’s something glorious about all of that neon, that sound and motion, the scent and taste of unhealthy treats, the little children deliriously happy, the adults throwing a smile of recognition and a nod to each other.

The teenage boys using the velocity and ferocity of rides as showcase for their bravery and an excuse to get close to teenage girls.

I’ve had people tell me this photo creeps them out. I have never understood why anyone would be scared of characters who evoke so much joy from children.

Model Destin pays tribute to Olivia Newton John from the finale of “Grease”. To be young and alluring! You know, for so many years I worked up the nerve to call my crush and ask if she wanted to accompany me to the county fair, but she never went on my arm. From middle school years onward, the fair took on the electric connotations of sex and pleasure — both from the excitement of anticipating the thrill of the rides to seeing the girls so beautiful, smiles on their faces, bites of cotton candy and funnel cakes in their mouths.
