Project: Lyrics and Images

Lyrics and Images

(Category: Portraits/Cross-category)

I feel an enormous connection to music. It is the soundtrack of my life. I want to combine my imagery with the lyrics from songs in the popular culture. As my example images showcase, both images and the lyrics take on a deeper resonance when combined.

I particularly like songs that have some connection to universal life experiences of love, hate, melancholy, loneliness, etc. I like songs that insinuate risqué things. That used to be an art form, getting around censorship of the airwaves. Nothing like that explicit warning label to make you wanna listen to a song, right? I also like that you can’t help but hear the song in your head by the time you finish

Example Images:

Some photos will be looking into and playing with the camera, but most will be editorial scenes depicting the model portraying a character. I love the idea of telling a story. In the example below, I use the fact that the model, Jen, is Brazilian in nationality. Ideally, all of the images will similarly reflect something of a personal nature of the model shown.

Q&A:

Q: What are you doing this for?

A: I want to put together a gallery show or online portfolio with 15-20 of these type images. It is making a statement about cross-pollination of the arts — how music informs and inspires the visual stories I tell.

Q: How do I participate?

A: Send me an email and specify that you want to. Based on whether we can coordinate our schedules, I might consider using you for a shoot. If you want to hire me to do a shoot from which we might get an image or two I can use for this, I will gladly give you a discount upon signing the model release and letting me know which images you are comfortable allowing me to share. For models I test with or do a trade shoot with, you should presume that one of the images from our photo shoot will end up being used for part of this portfolio.

“I love it in your room at night
You’re the only one who gets through to me
In the warm glow of the candlelight
Oh, I wonder what you’re gonna do to me
In your room
I come alive when I’m with you
I’ll do anything you want me to
In your room
I love it in your room all day
When you’re gone I like to try on all your clothes
You won’t regret it if you let me stay
I’ll teach you everything that a boy should know”

That thing that makes me
