It has been extremely gratifying to witness my photography gain a tremendous amount of exposure in the publicity campaign to promote a new photography book by my friend and mentor John Alexander Dersham.
The latest is this use of my portrait of John with his large format camera on the cover of Alabama Living magazine, the publication of electric cooperatives. They’ve featured my work several times in the past when I did freelance work for them, but this one is really special because I love knowing that some people may be inspired to purchase John’s book, “My Alabama John Dersham Photographs a State.”
I just got my own copy, and it is truly something special for anyone who can appreciate photography and the South. It would make a fantastic Father’s Day present for Dads who feel a connection to this area and comes as a flattering portrayal of my home state at a time when the rest of the country is lambasting the state over political controversies. John’s book shows us the side of Alabama that transcends those temporary things: A natural beauty that is awe-inspiring.
Here is the cover.
There’s a joke among photographers whenever someone wants us to do a photo shoot for them but proposes that we do it for them for free “for the exposure” it will get us instead of pay. Which, of course, is usually just someone wanting us to do free photography. If only the exposure always added up to what I’ve gotten from being associated with the publicity campaign around this book! The use of the photos is a prime example of how to effectively use my media kit photography.
Quite impressive. But not particularly surprising given how amazing John is, the outstanding quality of his book, and his skills as a marketing and promotional guy himself. DeKalb County is privileged to have John as our Director of Tourism.
I thank John for trusting me enough to create his portraits and for allowing me to ride piggyback off the greatness of his talent. He is quite literally what I aspire to become, both as a professional photographer and marketing professional and as a quality human being. I consider it a genuine blessing to have John in my life to show me what is possible.
Please do buy his book. You won’t regret it!
