Raging Against the Dying of the Light

“Every time when I look in the mirror,
All these lines on my face getting clearer.
The past is gone.
It went by, like dusk to dawn.”
– Aerosmith

I don’t want to grow old. I refuse to “go gentle into that good night” and will “rage against the dying of the light,” as Dylan Thomas put it.

I  define “oldness” as a crescendo of blandness, diminished enthusiasm for life, less arousal/passion, and heightened fatigue. So set in our ways that we can no longer open our minds to accept we don’t know it all.

I enjoyed attending Thursday’s screening of four short films all focusing on environmental issues in my home state of Alabama. The Southern Exposure event was held at the Little River Canyon Center.

Little River Riverkeeper Angie Shugart introduces the films at a screening hosted at the Little River Canyon National Preserve in Fort Payne, Alabama on Sept. 26, 2019.

Southern Exposure is a film fellowship program that is actively raising awareness about Alabama’s incredible natural resources and important environmental issues that impact all of us.

This innovative summer fellowship brings emerging filmmakers from across the country to tell authentic, engaging stories through short documentary films about Alabama’s environment.

Alabama Bridal Photography

I’ve had several people ask about wedding photography. I do very few of these events, preferring to do Alabama Bridal Photography, typically on a date before a wedding when the bride does a test run of her hair, makeup and the dress.

I’ve created this gallery to share some of my past bridal portrait photography and event coverage.

Let me know if you have any interest in booking a bridal portrait session with me.

One of my favorite new collaborators is Savannah M. With the annual arrival of the fall county fair to my hometown (and literal backyard), I proposed we do a “Grease”-themed carnival photoshoot.

“Grease” is a 1978 American musical romantic comedy movie based on the 1971 musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. The classic film depicts the lives of greaser Danny Zuko and Australian transfer student Sandy Olsson who develop an attraction for each other. The film stars John Travolta as Danny and Olivia Newton-John as Sandy.

Canyon Center Speakers Warn of Global Warming Effects

Last week I attended a program on agriculture and climate that should be very alarming to anyone who is not living in denial about global warming.

Dr. James McClintock, an Endowed University Professor of Polar and Marine Biology at UAB, presented his research about wildlife species in Antarctica while agricultural land use was the focus of the presentation by Steven Apfelbaum, the Senior Ecologist, Founder and Chairman of Applied Ecological Services.

Their findings suggest that the status quo is leading to serious peril for our planet. Rising temperatures are going to pose challenges for food production, and we are messing with things we do not understand that may cause the extinction of several animal species, disrupt familiar weather patterns and conditions, cause more intense hurricanes, deprive our society of potentially life-saving natural medicines being found in parts of the world we’ve only begun to explore, and force the world’s population to fight over dwindling resources.

Alabama Model Photographers

I had the opportunity this week to do another photo shoot with the lovely Savannah, a new model from Alabama. I usually stay away from railroad tracks (too cliche), but the railroad bridge in Gadsden offered an interesting backdrop for a portrait session. As an Alabama model photographer, I’m always looking for great settings and awesome new faces.
