The Echoes of HIV/AIDS in COVID Days

There are so many reverberations of the AIDS epidemic during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Sure, the coronavirus is more easily contagious and spread through the air, unlike the sexually-transmitted HIV, but both empower opportunistic infections and other things ring so familiar between then and now…

Dark Days of Fear and Death

bad date stories

Ladies Man? Hardly.

There was a time when getting infected with Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) was essentially a death sentence.

And not just death, but an unspeakably horrible demise, provoking intense fear and prejudice.

The AIDS epidemic emerged in the American landscape when I was a freshman off at college at Auburn University during a time when most young men revel in the pursuit of women.

What should have been a sexual heyday was instead an era of tremendous fear and social isolation for most Americans. My prospects for wild escapades went from few to none.

Much fear surrounded it because there was no cure and a limited amount of information to base prevention upon.

Blade Runner: Future Becomes Present

The Impact of ‘Blade Runner’ on Visual Art in Popular Culture

One of my favorite films is Ridley Scott’s masterpiece “Blade Runner“. I rewatched the movie following news of the death of the story’s villain, Rutger Hauer.

I was sad to hear of his passing and realizing that this will be, as of this November, a movie set in the past, joining such futuristic visions as “2001: A Space Odyssey“, “2012“, “Back to the Future II” (set in 2015), and “Escape from New York” (set in 1997). The book on which “Blade Runner” was based was set in 1992.

The following is a reprint of my November 2006 interview with Comedian/Actor Jim Gaffigan, who spoke with me for Savvy.com regarding his new television show at the time, “My Boys” on the TBS Network He would go on to appear in projects including “Flight of the Conchords,” “17 Again”, “The Daily Show,” “Portlandia,” “Chuck,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Chappaquiddick,” “Super Troopers 2,” “Bob’s Burgers,” and star in 23 episodes of his own 2015 TV series, “The Jim Gaffigan Show,” a comedy about a husband and wife trying to raise their five kids in a NYC two-bedroom apartment.

Jim Gaffigan – Just One of the Boys

Comedian/Actor Tells Savvy About His New Series on TBS, ‘My Boys’

You may recognize Jim Gaffigan from his roles in shows like “Ed,” “That ‘70s Show,” “The Ellen Show”, “Sex in the City,” and “Law & Order: SVU” among others, or maybe from his acting in such films as Broken Lizard’s Super Troopers and 13 Going on 30. As a stand-up comic, he’s had his own “Comedy Central Presents” special. And you never know when you’ll see one of his commercials for Sierra Mist on TV.

When I caught up with him, Gaffigan was preparing for the world to see him in the role of Andy Franklin, the brother of female sportswriter P.J. Franklin, lead character on the TBS show “My Boys“, which premiered Nov. 28, 2006.
